Summer
Rally 2006 |
The weather was on our side this year, being warm and dry, and so the bikes and trikes started to arrive on site. Soon what was a football pitch was starting to look like a campsite filled with various types of bikes and characters (and that was just the moo crew!).
Friday is always the quieter day as people arrive, pitch up and wander off to the bar. The night got going with our DJ Gordon who warmed up the assembled, and by now, relaxed crowd, before the band of the evening took to the stage, a rock outfit by the strange name of Powdermoney. They played their set before handing back to the roadshow, who did his usual sterling job and managed to extend the hours a little.
Then onward to the barbecue tent for a few tinnies and a burger before wobbling off to bed.

This left us to be woken by the sound of some early rain but we all just rolled over and dozed off again. By the time we did crawl out of the tents it had passed by and left us with a great sunny day to enjoy.
Some headed off to the town and one club disappeared for a ride out, others just chilled or wandered around the trade stalls, and the field, catching up with familiar faces. There was an organized ride out just before lunch for a blast around some of the local scenery with a break for an ice cream.
Around late afternoon the need to go to the hall and see why there was a horn going off heralded the only silly game of the day, more of a daft challenge really, involving a round wooden panel on half a bouncy ball. This winner was the one who could balance the longest with out setting the horn off, judging by the noise it went down ok, but most were happy to take in the atmosphere without all the games.
We did have a Tattoo competition this year sponsored by Rik of Smart Art (the tattooist on site) although it was not judged on stage as when it came to the best female some wanted a bit of discretion (cant think why?), but it was just a bit of fun and raised a few quid for the M.A.G’s fighting fund.

Come later, we had a visit from the young adults from the local SCOPE unit (who we have built up ties with over the past couple of years) for a listen to some of the music and have a bit of a boogie before heading back. Then it was back to the roadshow and the two band line up for Saturday night’s entertainment.
First band was a young group called Siamese Sluts, they where followed by rockabilly outfit, Fretz, who as usual give the rock covers a bit of a freshen up and they seem to go down well if you judge it by the reaction on the floor. It’s left to GBH roadshow to fill in the gaps again between bands.
The night ended up back in the burger tent for a bit before the very traditional wobble across the field muttering to yourself that it was pitched here earlier but someone must have moved it.
Now all it was left for me to do was help clear the site with the thought of at least that’s over till the Mad Cow in January, and in the meantime, for the rest of the year, I can kick back, relax and enjoy other clubs rallies.
In other words I won’t have to do marshalling duties with a sore head!!
