Pet Food Run 2006

It’s September so its time for our annual pet food run. This year we went over the border to Norfolk, to The PACT Animal Sanctuary, at Hingham nr Norwich.

It’s a small farm based home for it would seem just about any kind of animal, from small rodents, cats and dogs to large animals and birds.
Despite the early morning rain it dried out us and by he time we met up the sun was out all ready for a pleasant ride. Numbers up this year with 21 bikes and one trike turning up at the meeting point. Time to mix, get to meet people, look over the variety of assembled bikes before the run briefing.

We set off and had a small detour in Thetford to hook up with The Wild West Posse (West Norfolk MAG) that increased the turnout to 27 bikes. We did have Shel on her trike Dave at the start of the run but due to a slight technical problem it didn’t make it to the meeting. This was a double misfortune as the trike was towing the trailer with all the pet food and other donations on. A marshal was dispatched back to rescue our stranded damsel in distress and sorted out a van to tow it home and bring the goodies over slightly later.

The rest of the run proceeded smoothly and again using Herbs drop and point marshalling system we managed to keep together well. A decent run mostly good a roads a few smaller B’s but what the hell we wasn’t out racing A warm welcome was waiting for us and as usual a queue soon formed at the tea hut for a bite to eat and a drink. Staff at these places always welcome a pack of bikers carrying quantities of pet food.

Everybody refreshed, wandered around the sanctuary to see all the animals and mix with both the staff on hand and other riders. There was no formal plan for what we got up to there or the trip home so we all had plenty of time free to look around.

Then people, as they do, drifted off - no smuggled dogs or cats stuffed down jackets, just as well I was on the bike or my house would be home to half a dozen dogs by now.

By the time it was time to head home there was only five of us left so we were a bit more able to enjoy a more spirited ride back to Bury. (Within the limits officer). Couple of hours after arriving back got word on Shel’s sick trike, a broken engine putting it off the road for the foreseeable future. Get well soon Dave!!!
